In July, the newly formed #colleex network (pronounced as a homophone of colleagues) met in Lisbon’s Botanical Gardens, surrounded by peacocks, tea and coffee groves, pink 30’s concrete colonial restaurant and the species of Portugal’s empire.

The formats were diverse – the organisers going to enormous lengths to incorporate the visual, the exhibition, the film, the experiential, the workshop, and the written spoken presentation.

My talk, “Is a tweet a fieldnote?” fell into this last, most classical category. Taking the opportunity to discuss a piece first prepared for an Ethos event in February, I presented on my participation in #ESIFRice, an online ‘twitter experiment’ that linked ethnographers around the world through the hashtag.
