Back in November 2013, Salla Sariola, Patricia Kingori and Nora Engel convened a fantastic workshop in Maastricht on STS and Global Health. They were interested in the intersections between these two contested fields, and – now working with Catherine Montgomery – they still are, as their recent guest editorial in Science & Technology Studies demonstrates.
I contributed to their guest edited section on the theme, which has recently been published as Volume 30, issue 3 of Science & Technology Studies. I wrote about what it means to make space for ethical review – politically and infrastructurally – in the Asia-Pacfic settings where I have conducted fieldwork. “Making Room for Ethics” pays attention to the work going on to dedicate institutional space to ethical review as well as to what it means to convince people that it’s worth paying attention to.
