Research interests

Information and Communication Technology for Develeopment (ICTD; ICT4D), Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW)

Lars Rune Christensen’s research is on the intersection between information technology and ethnography. His focus is on developing a systematic, conceptual foundation for understanding, designing and integrating computational artifacts in practice, especially in the Global South and in relation to e-goverment in Denmark.

Lars is the primary investigator for Rohingya mHealth: Increasing Access to Healthcare for the Rohingya Community in the Refugee Camps in Bangladesh, funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation. The partners in the project will extend, enhance and evaluate ongoing humanitarian efforts directed at increasing access to healthcare for the Rohingya. The partners are the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU) and Friendship (an NGO registered in Bangladesh). At present, Friendship provides healthcare services to the Rohingya through a network of clinics staffed by paramedics. Key to these paramedics work is a mHealth application made by Friendship which helps them register patients, perform diagnosis, suggest treatment, and handle referrals. The ITU will lend its expertise to support and expand these mHealth initiatives in close collaboration with Friendship, and jointly designing and implement two new mHealth modules on mental health and nutrition. The project will use participatory and inclusive methods to generate data on the current mHealth services, participatory design to involve all stakeholders in the creation of the new mHealth modules, and qualitative and quantitative assessment to establish the impact of the new mHealth services.
