Introduction to Programming

The course gave a practice-oriented introduction to programming for students of the design-oriented study line. Topics of the course include sorting, stacks and queues, correctness of code, running time, computational complexity, reading and writing text-based databases, and the use of command-line tools. The course uses the Python programming language.
I was part of a three-person team setting up and teaching the first edition of this course. I was brought in to support the course the first year it was given in 2018.

This is a 12,5 ECTS course that follows after an introductory course to Service Design where the students learn about services, blueprints, user journeys, etc. Together with two external lecturers, I taught the course Service Design in the fall 2013. From 2014 I'm the course manager and teach the larger part of this course. About 60 students follow the course. The course cover topics related to Service Design such as sustainability, user experience, appropriation and unintended use of products and services.

The course follows after a course in interaction design. APC focus on educating the students in physical interaction modalities and concepts, learning fundamental electronics and programming of micro-controllers (Atmel AVR). At the end of the course, the students have to make an interactive Physical Computing project based upon a specific theme.

Some of the students were featured in UNIvers, the university 'newspaper' with their course project (the 2010 edition).

The course focused on Participatory Design. The history of PD, methods such as scenarios, personas and Wizard of Oz techniques together with recent development within PD. This includes PD with weak and ill users in their private homes. The students do a project to try out a PD project of their own.

The course gives the students an overview of how to design and build physical and interactive objects. The students will learn how to use small micro controllers in their design work. The course is an introduction to the field of physical computing where the students define interaction models and conduct experiments with micro controllers, sensors, actuators and small electronic circuits building the foundation for different real world installations.

A course that aims at providing students with a minimum base of what the web is, how it works and how to prototype and develop web content, based upon for example an web 2.0 architecture. They also have to install and set up a web and database server, learn and use PHP, MySql (Sql) and setup a CMS (Drupal).

During the course, students gets familiar with the concept of object oriented development through UML and Java. The students learn about the basics of computer languages (e.g. variables and methods) and how Object Oriented development works, using Java as the main tool. After the course the students are expected to have acquired sufficient knowledge to project and implement simple java programs that solve real life situations and problems.

The course teaches the foundations of Interaction Design and takes an interdisciplinary approach on the subject. The students study a broad range of Interaction Design theory and mix this with hands-on assignments. At the end of the course, groups of students will present a project that they have developed. Here field studies, participatory design and different creative methods have been part of a toolbox to aid the students in their work.

Siena Design Project (SDP) is an annual event where students from different European universities and institutions present their design work. During the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions I have been part of the internal organization and evaluation committee together with for example: Liam Bannon (IDC-UL/Ireland), Yngve Sundblad (KTH/Sweden), Harry Saddler (NASA, United States), Susanne Bödker (Aarhus/Denmark), Antonio Rizzo, Patrizia Marti (Unisi, Italy) and Claudio Moderini (Domus Academy, Italy). I have supervised Italian students before and during the SDP.

During the spring 2006 I was a WP responsible in the Master programme 'Communication Designer' at 'Arsnova', Siena in collaboration with the University of Siena. The aim for my WP was to aid in the development of physical, interactive prototypes based on concepts developed previously during the Master programme. The focus was on the physical construction of the prototypes and to integrate micro controllers and other hardware to construct required functionality. The WP had a duration of 1 month.
