Design Research

In the Design Research section we use design and design methods to explore the world as is and to push the way we understand and use technology in new directions. It is a fundamentally interdisciplinary section with humanities, social sciences, industrial design, engineering and computer science equally represented. Together we are all invested in how we, through design interventions and explorations, can propose alternative futures for everyday lives with and through technologies. We collaborate with international researchers, industry, the public sector, and community groups. The section consists of three research groups each representing core strength in their way of doing design research.

Head of Section: Jonas Fritsch

AIR Lab

AIR Lab explores design to address affective dimensions and somatic sensibilities of living with interactive technologies across applied contexts and artistic experimentation.

Mac and an arduino board

The IxD Lab

Using a critical and speculative lens on design, the IxD lab gives form to alternatives to current digital artifacts. These artifacts foster rich discussions with stakeholders on possible digital futures.

Procedural eXpression Lab

The Procedural eXpression Lab (PXL) explores the intersection of AI/machine learning, interaction/game design and human-computer interaction. We focus on designing new forms of AI-based user experience (e.g. personalized adaptive games, human-AI co-creativity, and eXplainable AI for end users) as well as understanding how people interact with AI/ML products.

Co-design

The Co-Design Group

The Co-Design group critically explores participatory design of (and with) digital technologies and services, including prototyping solutions, mainly in public sector areas where civic engagement and stakeholder agency is lacking (Co-Design).
